WORK on one of the biggest developments to come to the borough in recent years is now well underway.
Parkgate, which will bring a mix of shops and residential units to the heart of Shirley by April 2014, is rapidly taking shape since work started on the Haslucks Green Road site just three months ago.
The Solihull News was invited to the site this week by Shirley Advance, the developer who will deliver the project, to see what progress has been made.
Demolition work has now been completed on the site including buildings which had fallen into a state of disrepair and foundation work for the site’s 550 space basement car park is also near completion.
Robert Birch, of Shirley Advance, said: “We are pleased with the way things are progressing on site.
“We have had a few complaints from residents but, on the whole, feedback has been very positive.
“The basement car park has been designed to minimise the impact on Shirley Park and we are expecting this phase of the project to be completed just after Christmas.”
Mr Birch said there has also been interest from retailers wanting to occupy the units.
“I cannot be more specific at this stage but we have some very exciting things coming up. Sixty per cent of the retail floor space is already secured which includes Asda. We are confident about filling the units.”
Work is still ongoing to convert land on Haslucks Green Road into a temporary car park, which is expected to be completed in time for Christmas this year.
“There has been a slight delay but we still hope to be on schedule. It is hoped that this car park will be used by workers as a long stay option, which will free up spaces in the town,” Mr Birch added.
Residential units are expected to be completed by Spring 2014 with building and highway work due to start at the end of this year.
