Shirley residents slam mindless tree vandals

VANDALS have snapped a sapling little more than a month after it was planted outside the Shirley Institute.

VANDALS have snapped a sapling little more than a month after it was planted outside the Shirley Institute.

The hornbeam was placed outside the community centre in December, to replace a diseased oak that had to be removed last year.

But now the £150 specimen has been snapped apart, angering residents who were pleased to see the greenery planted in Church Road.

“I was spitting feathers when I saw it,” said one Neville Road resident. “I don’t know whether someone was coming back from the pub or something, but I just can’t understand why they would do something like that.”

The tree will now be examined by Solihull Council to see if there’s any chance of it making a recovery.
