MAGISTRATES decided that two women - one from Yardley - and a man who together stole items totalling almost £4,000 during a “shoplifting spree” should be sentenced at crown court.

MAGISTRATES decided that two women - one from Yardley - and a man who together stole items totalling almost £4,000 during a “shoplifting spree” should be sentenced at crown court.

Twenty-one-year-old Rae-Anne Preece, of Homelea Road, Yardley, Jaine Morbey, 44, of Wyndcliff Road, Small Heath, and her son Kane Jay Morbey, 26, of Heather Road, Small Heath, appeared before Hinckley magistrates in Leicestershire last Friday. (January 28)

At an earlier hearing, they admitted stealing clothing and jewellery, value £1,722.50 from Next; clothing value £705 from Monsoon; clothing totalling £263.97 from New Look; and clothing and jewellery totalling £1,205 from Top Shop, all in Leicester on August 26 last year.

Prosecutor Cheng Yeak said all three had previous convictions for dishonesty. She described the thefts as “pre-meditated group action.”

Presiding magistrate Jean Anderson told the trio: “We have decided that our powers are insufficient and we are going to commit all three of you to crown court.”
