THE new recycling programme that we are forced to use is inconvenient and has minimal benefits to the environment.
I would like to present a recycling programme that I have seen work in other areas. The programme is called ‘single stream’ and it is very simple. Each home is given one large bin for all their recyclables. This bin is collected weekly and brought to a central area where the various materials are separated for recycling.
This increases the amount of material for recycling and has the additional benefit of lower CO2 emissions as only one truck is needed. As a final benefit, as much more material goes in to the recycling stream, the small rubbish bins would be adequate for most homes.
