Edwina Lewis used to sit and enjoy See Hear - a BBC series especially for people who are deaf or hard-of-hearing.

And she was stunned when she was contacted by the makers, asking if she would like to feature in an episode of the weekly show.

The programme, due to be screened next week, will focus on Edwina’s skating.

Mum Margaret said that the news came out of the blue and that the family were looking forward to seeing the finishing programme.

“See Hear has been going for years [it started in 1981] and I remember watching it with Edwina when she was younger,” she said.

“We still don’t know who contacted the programme, but we were delighted when she was asked to appear in the Christmas edition.”

A keen skater since she was 11, Edwina, who works at Solihull Police Station, put the show’s presenters through their paces at the borough’s ice rink.

Filming took place last month, with the rink given over to the TV crews early one morning.

* The episode will air next Wednesday (December 16) on BBC2.
