Smith's Wood School teacher heads for retirement

She's  taught generations of families at a Smith's Wood School, but after 37 years, Mary MacDonald is calling it a day.

Mary arrived fresh-faced for work at St John the Baptist School in 1971 - on the very first day the school opened.

Head teacher Maria Salt said: "Mary's enthusiasm for working with children has been the driving force of her career.

"Her care and support for children and families in the school has served as an excellent example of the ethos of St John the Baptist School."

The 57-year-old has taught youngsters from nursery up to year six, but as Maria explained, "her heart has always been with the younger children".

"She enjoyed the challenge of getting them started with reading and writing. Mary will be missed here at St John's, but we are not really saying goodbye as she will always be a friend of the school," she added.

All four of Mary's children attended the school as did many of the current pupils' parents, who remember being taught by Mary.

Her last day saw her showered with gifts made by pupils as well as flowers from her colleagues.
