PLATINUM pair Reg and Marie Drew may have married in haste - but repent at leisure they most certainly have not.
The Monkspath couple celebrated 70 ‘wonderful’ years of marriage last Friday with their doting family and friends by their side.
Reg, a former major in the Army, and Marie, a driver in the Auxiliary Territorial Service (ATS), met in Wales where they were both stationed.
Believing Reg would soon be called overseas, within just a few days of meeting the couple were engaged to be married.
“I had the task of telling my family I had not only met a woman but I was also due to marry her,” 92-year-old Reg told us.
“We met at an Army Cadet staff dance, I was looking for someone to dance with.
“We have not regretted a single moment and I can still remember how stunning Marie looked on our wedding day when she lifted her veil.”
The couple, who have two children and two grandchildren, married in Nottingham and moved to Southampton before finally settling in Solihull in 1960. Marie ran two hair salons in Nottingham while Reg worked in insurance after the war.
“It [the marriage] has been marvellous,” 91-year-old Marie said.
And the secret to a long and happy matrimony? “We don’t really quarrel and you need to be able to do as you like and not to be bossed about,” she added.
The couple celebrated their 70th anniversary by spending the weekend with their family and close friends.
