ROYAL fans John and Eileen Eyre were given the perfect Diamond Wedding Anniversary present - an invite to the Queen’s Garden Party.
The occasion has been extra special for the Kingshurst couple, who missed out on a visit to the royal event for their Golden Anniversary.
But it was the persuasive charms of their granddaughter Joanne Dolan, who managed to get her grandparents access to the Buckingham Palace bash last Tuesday.
“We were really excited, we couldn’t think of anything else,” John told us this week.
The 81-year-old added: “We never dreamed we would get this opportunity. We did try before but we were unsuccessful - our granddaughter is obviously a lot more persuasive.”
John and Eileen, also aged 81, met at an amusement arcade in the Old Square in Birmingham.
“I was 16 and Eileen 17. I went with a mate to the amusement arcade and met Eileen. I remember a record playing at the time called You Make Me Love You by Harry James. We started talking and the rest is history.”
John worked at Magnet Joinery in Aston. He married Eileen, a former tailoress, at Hall Green Parish Church when he was 21, after he left the Army.
The couple have three children, seven grandchildren and one great grandchild.
When asked the secret to a long and happy marriage, John said: “It’s that old saying isn’t it? Never let the sun set on an argument. We have never had any serious problems in our married life.”
