A grinning George Osborne has been slapped on a billboard near Solihull town centre as part of efforts to put pressure on Solihull’s MP to back a clean energy target.
Friends of the Earth devised the provocative poster, which has the Chancellor of the Exchequer declaring: “I love you Lorely Burt xxx”.
The caption underneath the smiling Conservative’s face reads: “At least someone will be happy if your MP doesn’t sign up to the clean power target.”
The environmental group is urging Mrs Burt, a Liberal Democrat, to support a target to take carbon out of UK electricity by 2030.
They say that would set a firm deadline to help tackle climate change and secure eco-technology jobs for the West Midlands.
Carol Linfield, from Solihull Friends of the Earth, said: “This is very important which is why we’re so keen to get Lorely Burt on board.”
Mrs Burt said there had been hard-fought negotiations between her party and the Tories on the Energy Bill - due to become law later this year.
But she added that while she was in favour of setting a deadline herself, pressing for further changes would give the Conservatives an opportunity to pull out of the legislation altogether.
The billboard, on the Blossomfield Road railway bridge, will remain in place for a week.
And Friends of the Earth members were due to present a petition to Mrs Burt, signed by around 100 residents, at the MP’s surgery today (Friday).
