A FUNDRAISER from Shirley had the shock of his life recently when he found out he had been selected as an Olympic torchbearer.

A FUNDRAISER from Shirley had the shock of his life recently when he found out he had been selected as an Olympic torchbearer.

Paul Lloyd, aged 47, was nominated through his workplace, BMW, following his fundraising efforts for muscular sclerosis and cystic fibrosis sufferers.

“It was a complete surprise,” Paul told us.

“I was nominated and then put into a pool of around 8,000 others.

“To be selected from that many people is an honour.

“This will be a great experience and I can’t wait,” he added.

Big-hearted Paul has raised around £5,000 for charity and has taken part in the London Marathon and the Great North Run to boost funds.

He recently had a taste of things to come when he got to hold a replica of the torch at an event day in London.

Paul, a member of Solihull and Small Heath Athletics Club, will carry the torch on the leg through Tamworth on June 30.
