Former Liberal Democrat turned Green councillor for Shirley West, Howard Allen, will be the only member of his party standing for election in the Shirley area, he says this is in order to hold the Conservatives to account over Parkgate.
Coun Allen said: “For the sake of Shirley Park and Shirley’s future, we need to see anti-Parkgate campaigners elected in other Shirley wards.”
Green group leader Karl Macnaughton claimed his party was putting aside politics for the benefit of the community and they were planning to work with campaigners to ensure no more promises were broken over Parkgate.
But Leader of the Council Ken Meeson (Con) believed the move was simply a political tactic.
“They probably couldn’t find any candidates in those wards,” he said.
“It sounds to me like Howard Allen playing silly games. He seems to have got a bee in his bonnet about Parkgate despite the fact it’s been approved by the Government inspector. It’s a pity they’re not more concerned with the health of the local shops.”
The Lib Dems, who have also been critical of Parkgate, could benefit from the Greens’ decision. But group leader, Coun Ian Hedley, said he was “absolutely staggered” by news of the announcement and said the parties had no plans to work together.
