WITH the launch of the Single Market Act 2, Solihull-based Conservative MEP Malcolm Harbour has called for the Single Market Act to become an annual programme of initiatives.
The aim is to ensure that EU rules continue to be efficient and effective, combined with sustained pressure on enforcement of Single Market rules across Member States.
Mr Harbour, who chairs the Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee, said: “The Single Market has opened up enormous opportunities to study, play and work abroad. However we are still not fulfilling its full potential.
“The forthcoming 20th Anniversary of the Single Market and today’s ‘Act 2’ marks a raising of the pace of the Single Market story. The first Act has built solid foundations. Now we must move into a new forward-looking narrative.
“The real task for all of us is to future proof the Single Market, building on full implementation of the rules and initiatives already in place. In this time of crisis, we should embrace the Single Market as the greatest driver the EU has to deliver jobs and economic growth. It’s time we were all single-minded about the Single Market.”
