The bizarre theory has led to an increase in vehicle crime in the borough as thieves take the opportunity to steal valuable items like sat navs and laptops.

“Motorists are telling officers that they are deliberately leaving vehicles unlocked to prevent their cars being broken into, preferring criminals to open doors to the vehicles rather than having to smash windows,” said DCI Farooq Sheikh.
