SOLIHULL Police have arrested a man who’s believed to have threatened an elderly couple with a replica firearm before stealing a handbag.

The friends – a man aged 75 and a 76-year-old woman – were walking in Brueton Park yesterday afternoon just before 5.30pm when they were approached by a man who produced a gas-powered handgun.

A jogger reported the incident to police and, after the suspect’s description was circulated to officers, a man matching the details provided was challenged by a PC in Solihull town centre.

He tried to flee the scene but was soon caught and wrestled to the ground in Poplar Road.

An imitation weapon was recovered nearby along with a four-inch kitchen knife.

A 24-year-old man from Selly Park, Birmingham, has been arrested on suspicion of robbery and remains in police custody.

Solihull Police Detective Sergeant Stephen Seal, said: “The elderly man attempted to fend off the robber and took a swipe at him with an umbrella he was carrying.

“Both he and the passer-by who came to their aid gave excellent, timely descriptions to police and that enabled us to locate and arrest the suspect quickly.”

Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact them on 0345 113 5000.
