A hard-working Solihull schoolgirl has been presented with an award by double Olympic champion Dame Kelly Holmes.

Megan Walton, who attends Hazel Oak School in Shirley, was nominated by her teacher to take part in a unique mentoring scheme which pairs teenagers who have faced personal challenges with Team GB Olympians.

The 16-year-old was teamed with GB hockey player Charlotte Hartley and over the eight month scheme, Hartley supported Megan in building her confidence and motivation.

The athlete also helped her deliver a local community project, which was to organise a sign language workshop at her school to allow more people to communicate with Megan’s sister, who is deaf.

Megan was presented with her graduation certificate from the Unlocking Potential scheme by Dame Kelly at a celebration event in London.

Nominations for Unlocking Potential are now open until January 14. For more information visit ttp://www.aqa.org.uk/news-and-policy/supporting-education/unlocking-potential/

There are 40 places available for young peoples aged 14–19. Each school, college or centre can nominate a minimum of two students.
