Solihull shoppers outraged by EDL protest

Locals have condemned English Defence League extremists who held a demonstration in Solihull town centre last Saturday

Locals have condemned English Defence League extremists who held a demonstration in Solihull town centre last Saturday.

Shoppers watched in horror as 60 supporters of the far-right group waved flags and shouted anti-Islamist chants from Brueton Gardens, Warwick Road at around 1pm.

“I think it is ridiculous,” said Pav Sehra, 22, from Solihull. “They shouldn’t be allowed to do it in public.”

Dorridge resident, and local Labour Party chairman David Brittin, was ‘appalled’ by the protest. He added that most protesters came from outside Solihull, some as far as London, and would not be welcomed back by local residents.

West Midlands Police were present at the demonstration, organised by Matthew Pile, who runs the EDL Birmingham Division’s blog, which passed without incident.

An EDL member said: “We have liaised with police and the police have liaised with us. It is peaceful.”
