ADVENTUROUS Anna Garrett will be travelling out to India next year to help teach English in a school for the blind.
The 17-year-old, from Alderbrook Road, decided to get involved with Project Trust - a charity that sends school-leavers to volunteer with schemes in some of the world’s poorest countries.
The Sixth Form College student took part in a selection weekend at the Isle of Coll in Scotland, a couple of months ago, and will fly out to the Andhra Pradesh region of India in August next year.
“We had a talk at sixth form about the scheme, but out of some 60 students I was the only one who decided to give it a go,” said Anna.
“I always knew that I wanted to have a year out before I went to university and I’ve done a lot of travelling with my parents.
“It’s daunting, but I think it will be a wonderful project.”
The student needs £5,400 to cover the costs of her 12 month placement and will be holding a range of fund raisers to get together the money.
Her efforts got underway this week, with Anna selling raffle tickets at the college production of Arabian Nights.
