A REPEAT thief has been locked up for 18 months after trying to snatch a cash drawer from the reception of a Birmingham Airport hotel – just months after stealing equipment from an ambulance.

Tyrone McDermott jumped the front desk at the Etap Hotel on July 20 but made off empty handed after being disturbed by staff. He was arrested by Solihull Police officers later that day.

Last Christmas Eve, the 30-year-old stole a computer, navigation systems, mobile phones and other equipment from an ambulance parked outside Hall Green Health Centre.

He was handed a 12-month prison term, suspended for one year, for that offence in April at Birmingham Crown Court. And on Wednesday (August 11) the same court jailed McDermott after hearing how he’d struck again at the airport hotel and two other locations during that suspended period.

Sergeant Julian Powell from Solihull Police’s Offender Management Team, said: “He was given plenty of chances to change his ways; we offered drug rehab support and closely monitored his behaviour.

“He didn’t accept the help being offered to him and the justice system finally ran out of patience by handing him a lengthy prison term.”

The court heard how McDermott, who was living in Warwick Road, Olton, was also arrested on May 29 for stealing razors from a BP station in Stratford Road and admitted to another theft at Tesco’s in Hermitage Road, Solihull.
