DISHONESTY landed an Olton woman in court after she claimed over £5,000 in benefits she was not entitled to.

Carmel Dean, 42, pleaded guilty at Solihull Magistrates Court on Thursday, May 17, to failing to declare a change in her circumstances for her housing and council tax benefits.

Dean, of Arundel Crescent, started working full time from September 2010 to March 2011, and failed to declare it to the council, meaning she was overpaid by £5,969.15.

Dean was given a community order for 12 months and ordered to do 90 hours’ unpaid work. She will have to pay back the full amount as well as the council’s prosecution costs of £298.
