GIRLS from Years 10 and 11 at Saint Martin’s School in Solihull took part in the English Schools’ Swimming Association national swimming finals and found themselves facing an Olympic gold medallist in the Freestyle.

The team of Lucy Glover, Maria Lyri, Alice Mann and Evie Topping had earned their place in the finals to be one of only 16 schools nationally to qualify.

During the Freestyle final Maria found herself swimming against Ruta Meilutyte, who attends a British school and who won gold for Lithuania in the 100m breaststroke at the London 2012 Games.

The Saint Martin’s girls swam exceptionally well finishing 11th in the Freestyle and 13th in the Medley which is the best performance ever achieved for the school in this competition.
