John Smart, of South Woodland, London, was arrested in a Touchwood car park on March 30. He had been spotted taking the £269.95 iron from the store without paying.

The item was then recovered from the boot of a Ford Mondeo.

After CCTV footage was analysed, the 43-year-old was also charged with the theft of another steam iron, worth £220, on March 22.

The thief appeared at Solihull Magistrates via video link on Tuesday, April 3.

Nicola Purches, defending, said her client had attempted to escape his troubled past which involved taking drugs and he had ended up owing money to some “undesirables”.

Smart was handed an 18 week prison term for an activated suspended sentence and a further ten weeks for his recent steam iron thefts to run consecutively.
