SOLIHULL can certainly boast some wonderful mums after many of you wrote in nominating your Marvellous Mum in our Mother’s Day competition.

SOLIHULL can certainly boast some wonderful mums after many of you wrote in nominating your Marvellous Mum in our Mother’s Day competition.

We asked readers to tell us why their mum should be awarded the prestigious title for 2009 and be in with the chance of winning a fantastic £250 to spend in Mell Square.

The standard of entries was amazing and it was extremely difficult to select just one worthy mum – but this year’s Marvellous Mum 2009 is Eileen Smith from Acocks Green .

Nominated by her proud daughter-in-law, Diane Smith, 69-year-old Eileen and her husband Graham have cared for their son Warren who has special needs for the last 44 years.

“She is the kind of lady who you can’t help but warm to. She doesn’t ever moan about it because she loves him so much. She has two grandchildren who she adores and is such a thoughtful person when it comes to family” said Diane. “A lot of people in Mell Square know her as her only release from the norm is shopping and that would be in Mell Square. She doesn’t get a break from 24/7 caring and if there was some way of letting her know how wonderful she is, then this is it.”

The judges also picked two runners up in our Marvellous Mums competition.: Steven Harris who is 16, nominated his mum Shirley Harris from Chelmsley Wood after she managed to beat her alcohol addiction 15 months ago following 14 years on the booze. Steven, an Archway Academy student, said “Me and my brother Ben are so proud of what she has done. My mum is one in a million. She nearly died last year because of drinking and she has done this all by herself. Me and my brother want to tell the whole world how much we love and care for her.”

And Mavis Stewart from Wythall was voted a Marvellous Mum by her daughter Teresa Chakmak who said: ”She is 72 years old and always on hand whenever my sister or I need to call on her for anything, including the babysitting. Unfortunately on December 22 2008 she fell and cracked her forehead open on her patio which has left her now with an awful long scar across her forehead that she is very conscious of, and a split across the top of her nose. We had planned to eat out on Christmas Day but this had to be cancelled due to the state of her face. But she was really brave for her grandchildren’s sake.”

All of our Marvellous Mums will receive their prizes from Mell Square Shopping Centre. Look out for next week’s Solihull News when winner Eileen is presented with her £250 vouchers.
