KUSUM and Mansukhlal Tailor, owners of Joseph Fifer, have cinched this month’s coveted Business Person of the Month award.
The couple, who both come from a long line of dressmakers, have worked on suits for celebrities such as Mike Tyson, Jasper Carrott and Doug Ellis and provided services for the likes of Marks and Spencer and Zara before opening their first tailors and alterations shop for the public in Solihull.
Mansukhlal even took the surname Tailor after his family’s profession when he left Uganda, as the community he was from did not use surnames.
The pair said they were ‘really happy’ to receive the Business Person of the Month Award which would “help promote our business better than we ever could.”
Mansukhlal arrived in London aged 18 where he studied at the prestigious Tailor and Cutter Academy before working in world-famous Savile Row.
But he said that despite the glamorous image of the Mayfair street’s stores, the staff would be forced to work in ‘Victorian-style conditions.’
“It was all luxury upstairs, with American diplomats coming in and out, while downstairs it was dark and cold,” he added.
After meeting his wife Kusum at a relative’s wedding, Mansukhlal left Savile Row and together they joined Joseph Fifer, a tailors and alterations service for national and international retailers where they were so successful, they ended up buying the company out in 1986.
Since opening in the borough Mr and Mrs Tailor, known as Tony and Carol to their customers, have become renowned for their hard work, high quality alterations and great customer service.
We launched the Business Person of the Month Award, in partnership with Marriott Hotel Forest of Arden, to celebrate Solihull’s unsung business heroes.
An awards gala will then be held at the end of the year to announce one of the monthly winners as the Solihull Business Person of the Year.
