IN reply to a letter in this week’s paper (Solihull News), my husband and I were also maddened by last week’s article about the SMBC patting themselves on the back for collections of council tax.
We have both worked all our lives and always paid our dues, never had any benefits.
During the last 12 months my husband has had to take a pay cut so that the Solihull firm he works for survives the credit crunch.
We approached the council as we were having difficulties paying our tax. We also quickly received a court order and on explaining to the council our difficulties they put our monthly payment up to £293 for four payments which means instead of having the whole year to pay, we are paid up by October.
We defaulted on £100 payments so how can we afford to pay more than double? We are well struggling now, thank you the people-caring Solihull borough council!
Why can we not re-instate direct debits and have a payment card for the arrears and pay this off before the start of 2010 council tax charges. It seems a simple solution instead of driving people unnecessarily into further financial hardship.
