COUNCIL leader Ken Meeson has contradicted reports from the council’s planning department and insisted temporary parking will be provided for Shirley Parkgate.
Coun Meeson (Con) said work to create the replacement car park to the 220-space British Legion one, was planned to start after all the bungalows at the Haslucks Green Road site had been vacated.
It was never an if, it was a when, he added. It was always going to be introduced.
The leaders claims contradict members of his own party who raised concerns following the report of the councils Head of Design and Development, which stated: It is not considered that parking demand exceeds supply and so at this stage, the requirement in the second part of the condition (i.e. to provide additional temporary car parking) has not been triggered.
Coun Howard Allen (Greens, Shirley West) said of the affair: If it wasnt so tragic for the High Street, it would be laughable. The Town Centre Partnership are so concerned, that they are now applying pressure.
