I have been interested to read some of the letters recently regarding the changes to the Maternity Unit at Solihull Hospital, in particular, the letter from Drs Watkinson, Philpott and Ninan and Vikki Collins.
I am amazed at the amount of opposition to these proposed changes and am having difficulty in understanding why Moms would not wish to have their babies delivered at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, safe in the knowledge that should they need neonatal support it is available immediately.
Yes, it may be for some a longer journey, but surely the health and well being of mom and baby is the most important factor, and far outweighs any inconvenience in travelling slightly further.
My daughter was born at 28 weeks in Birmingham Heartlands Hospital, and spent 16 weeks in the Neonatal Unit there, and I can not praise or thank everyone at the unit enough for the care and support they showed to us.
We should all consider ourselves extremely fortunate to have such a fantastic resource available to us.
