LATEST figures show that unemployment has increased in Solihull since Christmas.
A total of 5,506 people were claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in January, according to the new statistics.
The number of claimants had been gradually falling in the final months of 2009.
But last month’s figures show a rise from the 5,251 people who were on the dole in December.
Kiran Virk, from Birmingham and Solihull Chamber of Commerce, said: “Today’s figures are a mixed bag of good and not so good news and demonstrate a still fragile economy.
“Until the government introduces initiatives to help businesses, such as scrapping the rise in employer National Insurance contributions, companies will not recruit.”
Previously the chamber warned that the decline in unemployment could be influenced by firms taking on extra staff over the festive period.
