PUBLIC transport users are officially being served by the most efficient transport authority in the country after Centro won the top prize at the industry’s equivalent of the Oscars last week.
Judges awarded the organisation with The Joe Clarke Integrated Transport Authority (ITA) of the Year trophy at the National Transport Awards after a year of progress and improvement.
Centro’s bid for the prize, which was up against submissions from England’s five other ITAs, included information on how the region’s transport co-ordinator had moved forward in its aim to provide the West Midlands with a world class integrated system.
A particular emphasis was placed on the work done to improve access to jobs and housing, as well as combatting congestion.
These, as well as other bus service improvements, including the work of the Safer Travel Police Team to reduce crime and the provision of state-of-the-art Real Time Information, has led to the West Midlands having the highest bus use per population outside of London.
Chairman of Centro, Councillor Gary Clarke said: “We have worked tirelessly with partners over the last few years to make significant steps in providing the West Midlands with the world-class integrated and easy to use transport system that it needs and deserves.”
