Unemployment rises by 3,000 in the West Midlands

ALMOST 4,300 people joined the dole queue in Solihull last month as numbers claiming job seekers’ increased to 3.4 per cent.

Figures released by the Office for National Statistics revealed an extra 164 people claimed unemployment benefits in the borough, from December to January with the total number of unemployed across the West Midlands rising by 3,000 to 238,000.

Nationally the total dropped by 14,000 to 2.5 million.

Experts say young school leavers have been worst affected.
