REPORTER Sophie Cross got more than she bargained for when she bit into a scrumptious chicken tikka baguette on Wednesday - a very hungry caterpillar!

The shocked Birmingham Mail journalist had already munched half of the tasty snack- purchased from The Fat Sandwich Company near Touchwood, Solihull - when she spied the small, green visitor lurking in the salad.

“Thank goodness I spotted it before I ate even more”, said the 25 -year-old. “I feel really sick now”.

Richard Bannister, owner of the popular eaterie in Manor Walk, was stunned when we told him of our hack’s culinary experience. “This has never happened in 11 years of business here or in our Tamworth shop. All the salad is washed and then put in the salad spinner so I can’t understand it - it’s not very nice I know. I will make the staff aware of this. Please pass on my apologies and if Sophie would like to pop in we will arrange a free baguette.”
