ON Wednesday, October 1 it was UK Older Persons' Day and a lovely occasion was organised by Rob Embrey of Solihull Community Housing at the Onwards Club in Chelmsley Wood. As an older tenant, aged 87, I was invited to go along and read some of the short stories and poetry that I enjoy writing.
There were several other activities given voluntarily that were suitable for us older ones. Age Concern and Social Services were there to give helpful advice. How disappointing it was that with all the hard work put in, very few older people attended.
But I took along with me some older friends and we were not disappointed because the highlight was a performance from a group of children with their teacher from Grace Academy. They were an absolute delight and entertained us with singing and dancing.
They gathered around me as I sat and read a selection of my short stories and poetry. They showed great enthusiasm.
I do not get many highlights in my life these days but meeting these children was so very enjoyable.
I thank Rob Emery so much for enabling me to enjoy a very well organised and happy event.
