Vandals hit play area

ALMOST £4,000 worth of equipment went up in smoke last week, when yobs started a fire in a children’s play area.

This week, Solihull MP Lorely Burt described the arson, in Elmdon Park, as “wanton vandalism”.

The fire has destroyed a swing and safety mat, ruining facilities which were only finished in July.

“The friends of the park have worked wonders to create a play area that everyone can enjoy,” said Mrs Burt.

“It’s very dispiriting.”

Solihull Council, who applied to the Government for funding, said that it would cost over £3,500 to replace the equipment.

Councillor Tim Hodgson, cabinet member for the environment, slammed those responsible for the damage.

“The council is facing some tough financial challenges at the moment and we can ill-afford to clean up after these acts of vandalism,” he said.

Members of the Elmdon Park Support Group, who helped the council to plan the play area, are also disappointed.

Sandra Beeson said: “This is a real blow for the community.”
