ONE thing we hadn’t bargained for when our reporter David Irwin set off to walk the route of the proposed HS2 rail line through Solihull, was the amount of litter he would find along the way.
Walking up Diddington Lane from Hampton in Arden all appeared peaceful until he hit the main Kenilworth Road/Chester Road roundabout.
Stonebridge Island and the stretch up the A452 were particularly appalling, all of it, one presumes, jettisoned from passing cars using the dual carriageway.
There really is no excuse for littering, whether it’s out of a car window, in the streets or in the countryside.
You wouldn’t do it at home so why do it elsewhere?
Car drivers though are a particular case - whether it’s an ashtray casually emptied when parked up or crisp packets, drink cartons or sweetie wrappers chucked out at 70mph.
Fast food companies are regularly castigated for the rubbish left in the streets with their name on it but the real culprits are those who buy the goods then don’t dispose of the rubbish properly.
It’s time everyone took a bit of pride not just in their own area but in the country at large.
Clean it up!
