WATCH out for jewellery thieves in Solihull - that’s the message from police warning of a scam that has hit the borough in recent weeks.
Officers say several incidents involving people of Eastern European appearance have been reported in which shoppers are approached and jewellery placed around their neck.
When the victim asks them to remove it, the thieves take the victim’s own necklace and leave them wearing a cheap imitation. It is only later they realise a switch has taken place.
DC Maxine Cave, leading the investigation, said: “Detectives are investigating these incidents and the possible links between them all. They are confusing experiences for the victims and our message to the public is to never engage with people who approach you in the street offering jewellery. Their intention is most likely to steal from you so don’t give them the chance. If you feel unsafe, go to the nearest person to alert them and ask to call the police.”
In all incidents, the suspects have been of Eastern European appearance and are of various ages and are of both sexes.
