Chris Holbrook, aged 33, has been giving £10 away through his website, FreePostcodeLottery, every day since April last year.
Users register their postcode free of charge, and, if their luck’s in and the daily postcode matches theirs, winners have 24 hours to collect the cash, otherwise it is rolled over to the following day.
A year on, and the site has attracted over 18,000 users and revenue from advertising has allowed Chris to pay off the £5,000 spent on prizes and setting up the business plus a further £1,000.
He has also doubled the daily giveaway to £20.
But, the ride was not always smooth for Chris when launching the site.
“The first six months were dire,” he said.
“I was giving cash away every day and making next to nothing, only to receive emails accusing me of being a con artist.
“I was about to pack it in when the site caught the attention of an internet entrepreneur who taught me how to monetise the site’s traffic more effectively. Six months on, I’ve broken even and can afford to double the prize money.”
Social media has helped draw in more players; Chris is hoping that the site continues to grow and wants to double the prize money every year.
“I want it to snowball. In ten years, we’ll be giving away £1,000 a day.
“I very much hope the success continues and I can give up my day job to concentrate on the site full time.”
