Witnesses sought after spate of armed robberies

WITNESSES are being sought by police following a spate of armed robberies across the borough.

One robbery saw a man threaten terrified staff at a Shirley building society with a claw hammer before escaping with an unspecified quantity of cash.

The robbery took place shortly before 5pm on Friday January 2 at the Nationwide Buidling Society in Stratford Road.

The robber was white, in his twenties and around 5ft 10in tall. He was wearing a green parka coat, with a furry hat and baseball cap.

Detectives think he may have eascaped on a bus heading towards Solihull Lodge.

Anyone with informations is urged to contact DS Bill Lorne or DC Rhett Collier in the robbery team at Solihull on 0845 113 5000.

Detectives are also calling for help with two more robberies.

The first happened at 4.55am on Saturday December 27 at Mills Newsagents in Prospect Lane Solihull and the second one took place at 4.40am on Friday January 2 at the One Stop store in Stratford Road, Shirley.

In both robberies, offenders entered the store just after opening as staff were preparing for a day’s trading.

The offenders, armed with knives and batons, threatened staff, before stealing a large amount of cigarettes.

Anyone who witnessed either robbery, saw any suspcious vehicles in the area or has information about sales of cigarettes should contact the robbery team at Solihull CID on 0121 712 6080.
