THE Silhillians Sports Club has started work on a brand new floodlit Astroturf pitch at its grounds in Warwick Road.
The £450,000 project has been planned since May 2009 in order to ‘encourage more visitors to the area and to the club’ according to Keith Waterhouse, General Manager at The Old Silhillians. “We would also like our Hockey club to return, as they have to play on Astroturf”, he continued.
The pitch will be used for sports such as football and hockey and will be divisible into three five-a-side football pitches.
Though pre-booking will be necessary the facility will be open to everyone seven days a week, regardless of whether they are a member of the club.
President of the Silhillians, Rupert Young, said, “These are exciting times for the Sils. The pitch will be a great asset to the local and wider community and will contribute greatly to our efforts to encourage more and more people to take up sport.”
The club has raised over £400,000 towards the project including a Sport England National Lottery grant, a grant from the National Hockey Foundation and generous donations from members and friends of the club. A formal opening is planned for late September or early October, when work on the pitch should be finished.
