THE Police’s youngest recruits have been helping to fight crime in North Solihull as junior Police Community Support Officers.

Youngsters from four junior schools in Fordbridge and Kingshurst joined officers to learn how West Midlands Police is tackling issues such as inconsiderate parking and speeding.

The scheme also sees the junior PCSOs share the issues that are affecting them, then work alongside police to see how they respond to the problems.

PCSO Karen Ballard said: “We wanted to know what issues were affecting younger people on their journeys to school, or when they were out playing with friends.

“The Junior PCSO scheme allows us to not only do this, but also show the group how we resolve these issues, teaching them about the consequences of criminal behaviour at the same time.

“Peer pressure can often be seen as a negative thing, but through this project we are hopeful that the group will use their experiences to help their fellow pupils with problems, and how to work them out.”
