SOLIHULL is about as far from the sea as you can possibly get in this country - but locals will soon have a beach right on their doorstep.
Fifteen hundred tonnes of golden sand is being used to create the bucket-and-spade attraction near Meriden, the official centre of England.
And 10,000 tonnes of locally-sourced sandstone will form a cove surrounding the beach at the Heart of England Conference & Events Centre in Meriden Road, Fillongley.
The man-made beach is the brainchild of the owner of the centre, Stephen Hammon, who has pumped £1.4 million into a brand new adventure park opening next month, which includes a five-acre lake.
He said: “It was a logical step, having spent 25 years entertaining the public as well as staging some spectacular events.”
Mr Hammon added that the beach is intended to appeal particularly to young families who can’t face a four-hour round trip by road to the real seaside.
