If your retirement is approaching and you find yourself in the enviable position of being able to move to greener pastures then the world literally is your oyster.

The English are renowned for their global retirement habits, with many choosing exotic destinations to while away their later years. And why not, if you work hard in your life you deserve some time sitting comfortably with your feet up in the sunshine. According to home office statistics more than 4 out of every ten UK retirees is hoping to live abroad. They went on to say.

“Around 42 per cent of people aged over 55 said they were thinking of relocating overseas, with 38 per cent considering doing so within the next five years”

Certain destinations have become synonymous with UK retirees that can be a real boon. Others have blazed the trail creating destinations that are now UK friendly, sporting businesses that have sprung up to offer legal help, property consultancy.  All this, plus an instant sense of community and access to some of those English foodstuffs its hard to live without.

For many, a lack of sunshine has seen their joie de vivre withering on the vine and a one-way ticket to the destination closer to the equator is a must. Others seek a gentler pace of life, harking back to sepia tinted memories of their youth when the world a smaller, less threatening and simpler place. Those seeking a more relaxed culture, and a social fabric that is not stretched to tearing point, might be wise to consider France or Spain. Both these countries lay at practically at our feet, yet they couldn't be more different to the UK. France is a sleeping giant; a huge country with a small population and vast tracts of nearly people free countryside. Regions sit in a post WW2 slumber with fine wines, food and culture never far away. You will be following in the footsteps of many an ex-pat so you can be sure to find lots of great help available if you choose to look for a property in France for sale.

Spain is the choice of a great, many UK retirees and has allowed parts of itself to be Anglicised in a way that France never would, providing a home away from home for expats who wish to experience a different culture without loosing all the trappings of England.

Further abroad Florida is a popular choice for both UK retirees and those from the US. With a stunning climate, and an endless array of golf course, shopping malls and a cheap cost of living its retiree heaven.

Wherever you choose, careful research is essential. It takes more than a short holiday to decide whether somewhere is suitable. Luckily, with rented accommodation available at bargain prices out of season it’s easy to take an extended break on you’re chosen country and get a true feel for it.
