Moors saw their FA Cup dream ended at the first hurdle as they fell to a narrow defeat at Ilkeston.
The hosts’ skipper Joe Maguire dealt Solihull the fatal blow, nodding in a David Morgan free-kick in the 78th minute for the only goal of the game.
With an unchanged team for the third game running, Moors were instantly pressing their hosts, Daly’s header from a Beswick corner being cleared off the line.
Moors could have taken an early lead but Darren Byfield’s shot from 12 yards was well saved by Smith. It was from one of Dom Langdon’s long throws that Solihull’s best chance came on 21 minutes. Daly met the ball as Lane cleared off the line only to see it cannon off the crossbar to Bogle but his header also met with the same fate.
Darryl Knights’ goalbound shot from 18 yards took a deflection as it sailed wide on 24 minutes while on the half-hour mark Breeden did well to foil Duffy’s low effort as it bobbled in front of him.
The game effectively turned on 38 minutes when Fleet was red-carded for a rash uncharacteristic double-footed tackle on Richards. Moors still looked a threat though and a bullet header from Langdon was well saved by Smith. Manager Bignot replaced Byfield and Beswick at the restart with Taundrey and Denny on to bolster the midfield but ten-man Moors were under the cosh.
Adams was a real handful down the left flank while Richards was finding too much room down the right and twice only Daly stood between him and a possible goal.
Adams shot over with an hour played while ex-Nottingham Forest man Morgan unleashed a screamer on 68 minutes which touched the crossbar on its way over.
With Moors confined to their own half, a goal seemed inevitable and it duly arrived on 78 minutes. A defence-splitting Morgan free-kick was well met by captain Maguire whose header from five yards gave Breeden no chance.
In the first of the two minutes of added time Ilkeston had the ball in the net again only for Duffy to be ruled offside but then Moors had their best chance of the afternoon to score.
Knights was through one-on-one with Smith but again the keeper reacted well to block the shot and Bogle’s follow-up was cleared off the line.
Moors are back in league action this Saturday when they host Bradford Park Avenue at the Autotech Stadium.
