IN a fiercely fought local derby at Sharmans Cross Road, a depleted Silhill rued first-half missed chances from Powell, Icke and Jackson, although Ross Jackson did hit the 1-0 into the roof of the Shirley Athletic net after 31 minutes.

That goal, Jackson’s 31st this season, followed a cross from the left by Rikki Badger and a neat touch by Tom Sutheran.

Four minutes after that, Shirley Athletic leftback Matt Whitehouse was the provider for his right midfielder Tom Craine, who out-jumped Sils’ defenders to head down unstoppably to the right side of home glovesman Andy Masters.

In the 62nd minute, Silhill’s perennial adversary, the Shirley Athletic No10 Richard Liernahan, received from his skipper, centre half Jake Sammons, to volley in the winning goal.

Despite heroic goalbound efforts by the home team in the final half-an-hour, the visitors’ net led a truly charmed life, with Lady Luck visibly straddling their crossbar.

With typically gallant, all-action tackling and distribution, livewire Jamie Rathbone put in an electric performance to earn Silhill’s Man-of-the-Match award.

On Saturday Silhill play Old Wulfrunians in the AFA Premier at Sharmans Cross Road, kick off 2.30pm.
