SILHILL Football Club hosted their annual Gala Awards event on Sunday July 12 2009.
Jubilant Silhill FC of the Birmingham & District AFA had much playing success to celebrate, welcoming a host of present and former members, WAGS, their families and guests to Sharmans Cross Road.
Last season, Silhill teams won both the Birmingham & District AFA’s Bill Hill Cup and Minor Cup as well as being losing finalists in the prestigious Birmingham Junior Cup.
A well-supported, annual five-a-side Silhill football tournament starting at 1pm preceded the awards ceremony at 4pm. The deserved five-a-side winners were the superfit Hodge Hill All Stars who inflicted a crushing 4-0 defeat on Nick Edmond’s Cats Whiskers team in the Final with goals by Andrew Papageorge (2), Lee Blakeman and Bryan “The Bear” Leslie.
Among the 2009 awards, Silhill FC’s proud Footballer of the-Year was Johnny Walker of the Silhill 2nd team, whilst Young Player of the Year was named as rising 1st XI star David Johnson.
The Golden Boot statuette for Top Goalscorer was awarded for the first time to Andrew Papageorge of Silhill 4ths with a highly creditable 30 goals.
Silhill FC’s Most Improved Player was named as Andy McDonagh, whilst Team Motivator was Tommy Smith.
Now, having set the seal on last season’s successes, the committee and members of Silhill FC are planning ahead for what promises to be a thrilling and action-packed 2009/10 season, kicking off on Saturday September 5.
Pre-season training is being held at Sharmans Cross Road on Tuesday evenings (meeting at 6.30pm for a 7pm start) from July 14.
