Highgate’s start to the season has gone from bad to worse after two further defeats saw them remain goalless and pointless in the Midland Football Alliance.
The Shirley side went down to Oadby Town on Saturday, losing 4-0, and then lost to Westfeilds on Tuesday night 4-3.
On Saturday, Highgate started brightly, with four debutants looking to make an impression. But just as it looked like Gate would get the breakthrough, it was the home side who took the lead through Nick Pollard, and the same player doubled the lead just before half time.
An exceptional 40yard speculative effort from Oadby’s Aaron Butcher, just a minute after the break, went in off the of the cross bar to extend the home side’s advantage even further. Full back Alton Rennals completed the scoring with a bullet header on 60.
Highgate’s second game of the week, away at Westfields, was a much closer affair with a seven-goal thriller. Westfields took the lead through Mark Hibbard, but with his side playing the better football, Gate’s Tom Thacker equalised.
After the break two goals in the space of a minute saw the sides again on level terms, Hibbard restoring the home team’s lead only for Nathan Hands to head in the equaliser following good work by Jake Brown.
Thacker completed his brace to put Gate in the lead for the first time, but Westfields took the three points and remain unbeaten in the league, thanks to late goals from Daniel Moon and Darrell Addis.
