TEETH were gnashing when Athletic went from a squad of 13 players on Friday evening to fielding just ten on the morning of this first round AFA Senior Cup clash against a very good Wednesbury outfit.

Despite this, they started the brighter and passed well and took the lead, a great through ball from James Evans finding Tom Craine, who supplied a first class finish. There then followed a wave of Wednesbury goals, quickly rattling in six before half time.

However just before the 45 were up a Matty Whitehouse cross was met by James Evans’ head, with Tom Craine adding another making it 6-3.

In the second half, the home side sat back, allowing Shirley to dominate although they squandered numerous chances. Athletic eventually pulled one back through Rob Unsworth, but late on Wednesbury bagged their seventh.
