Heels kicking as big freeze stops play

SHIRLEY side Highgate were left kicking their heels last week-end when the long trip to Malvern Town was postponed owing to a frosted pitch.

SHIRLEY side Highgate were left kicking their heels last week-end when the long trip to Malvern Town was postponed owing to a frosted pitch.

Despite the frustrations of a blank Saturday, the break gave manager Marcus McDonald the chance to complete the signing of Carl Martin from Oldbury Athletic.

The highly-rated utility player previously worked with the Gate boss during his time in charge at Cradley Town. Martin will be a valuable addition to the squad, especially as leading scorer Seb Hamilton is recovering from a pre-Christmas knee operation.

How long McDonald will be able to hold on to a fit again Hamilton though is another matter, with interest already being shown in the prolific striker by Oadby Town, Hednesford and Chasetown.

As he looks to get his side back to winning ways in an effort to move away from the bottom end of the table, McDonald will also be hoping that long term injury victim Neil Kitching is edging his way nearer to full fitness.

With Tom Giddings also available and itching for a starting place, McDonald could well soon find himself with a full squad for the first time since taking charge.

* On Saturday Highgate are at home to Leicestershire side Kirby Muxloe (3pm) and on the following Tuesday away at Coalville (7.45pm).
