Highgate back to work after relegation

Highgate manager Mark Birch has been busy preparing his players for life in the recently formed Midland Football League First Division.

Following Highgate’s enforced relegation for not meeting ground grading requirements, new manager Mark Birch has been busy preparing his players for life in the recently formed Midland Football League First Division.

A strenuous training regime has been combined with a number of pre-season friendlies.

However, despite draws with Romulus and Solihull Moors and wins over Feckenham and Earlswood Town, the former Moors striker knows he faces a tough start in his first managerial role, beginning with a trip on Saturday to last season’s Midland Football Combination runners-up Bromsgrove Sporting with Atherstone Town the visitors to Tythe Barn Lane on Tuesday.

Birch, assisted by Gavin Hurren and coach Lee Knight, has retained a number of last season’s squad with Craig Hall, Lei Brown, Danny Rolfe, Nathan Pulisciano, Tom Lacey, Joe Adams, Nathan Edgington and Reece Hewitt all putting pen to paper. With the addition of further youth and experience, he will hope to have a team capable of challenging for a quick return to the Premier Division.

FRIENDLIES: 02 Aug (A) Bromsgrove Sporting (3pm); 05 Aug (H) Atherstone Town (7.45pm); 09 Aug (H) Littleton (3pm); 13 Aug (A) Nuneaton Griff (7.45pm); 16 Aug (H) Coventry Copsewood (3pm); 23 Aug (H) Pershore Town (3pm); 25 Aug (A) Cadbury Athletic (3pm) tbc; 30 Aug (H) Alvis Sporting (3pm)
