Following three successive league defeats, Highgate got their season off to a start on Tuesday evening with a deserved win over previously unbeaten third placed Tividale, lifting them out of the bottom four of the Midland Football Alliance League table.
Having given a good account of themselves in losing to the top two placed teams, Westfields and Loughborough University, Tuesday’s result was always on the cards with manager Keith Checketts especially pleased with what was a good all round team display.
Gate forced the early pace and in the opening minutes Melody found Reece in front of goal only for defender Stephane Messomo to nick the ball away to safety. The opening goal came after just nine minutes with Hewitt crossing for Abonandi to guide the ball past keeper Timothy Beech.
The second goal came on the quarter hour mark when centre half Dale Moon outjumped Beech to head the ball in under the crossbar.
It took Tividale 20 minutes for their first attempt on goal when Toby Checketts got in a crucial block to deny Ryan Trumpeter.
Six minutes before the break, Jukes reduced the arrears with a scrambled goal which Sean Edwards had no chance of saving. Within 60 seconds, Gate responded in the best possible fashion restoring their two goal lead.
In the second period, full back Ben Judd punished Tividale for a series of cynical fouls hitting a 25 yard free just inside Beech’s near post to complete what was to be the scoring.
