A LATE strike from energetic Peter Faulds set up a tasty tie with League One side Walsall in the third round of the Birmingham Senior Cup.

Two goals from man-of-the-match striker Jake Edwards had put Moors ahead before the visitors fought back through substitute Neil King and Jason Taylor.

Faulds will get all the credit for his contribution however without Edwards in the team Moors could have been looking at another early cup exit.

The classy forward missed a good chance early on but made amends in the 15th minute when he latched onto Jason Moore’s through ball to finish past David Clarke, who was later forced off through injury.

Replacement goalkeeper Andrew Stevens did well to prevent former Birmingham City defender Carl Motteram doubling their lead on the half hour mark as Moors ran rings round a lacklustre Rugby side.

But he could do nothing to stop Edwards in the 47th minute when the powerful marksman scrambled in Moore’s cross to put the hosts firmly in the driving seat.

However, Rugby refused to give up and King quickly reduced the deficit against the run of play.

Minutes later the struggling Southern Division outfit were back in the game when Theo Streete was beaten in the air by Taylor who headed home to level the scores.

The game had turned into a proper cup tie but Moors started to edge back into control as time ticked away.

Edwards had a glorious opportunity to grab his hat-trick in the 78th minute but defender Steve Evans beat him to the ball on the goal-line and cleared for a corner.

It just needed a touch of class to finish off the battling visitors and Faulkner had Faulds to thank for that when Edwards turned provider and played a delightful through ball for the midfielder to coolly slot home.

Tomorrow Moors hope to take their cup form into the league when they entertain Vauxhall Motors.
