Highgate gave a good account of themselves against the undefeated second-placed students but once again a fine performance counted for nothing as they slumped to a third consecutive league defeat which leaves them pointless and in the bottom three of the Midland Football Alliance League table.
In the early stages Gate were unable to come to terms with the University’s classy brand of possession football conceding twice in the opening 15 minutes to a quick brace from Daniel Delderfield.
The introduction of Stefano Abonandi gradually steadied the ship and Gate deservedly reduced the arrears on 21 minutes when Danny Kerrigan slipped a low effort beyond keeper Brendan Hazlett’s reach.
Within two minutes the deficit was again increased to two goals with a sweet strike from Matthew Coluno from 20 yards out.
But ten minutes after the break Andrew Fraher turned in Reece Hewitt’s shot. The chance of an equaliser was spurned when Ben Judd’s 69th minute penalty kick was saved before Gate were undone for a fourth time when Raul Alexis completed the scoring late on.
On Saturday Highgate entertain fellow Midland Football Alliance side Willenhall Town in the FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round (3pm) and on Monday evening they return to League action with a trip to Coventry Sphinx (7.45pm).
